Stockholm, June 12th – Wopke Hoekstra, the European Union’s Commissioner for Climate, visited Stockholm to discuss the role of forest value chains in achieving the EU’s climate goals. The event, organized by the EU Commission’s representation office in Sweden, aimed to highlight innovative approaches to sustainability within the forestry sector.
Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, overseeing climate, net-zero, and clean growth initiatives, set the tone for the day with a keynote address. Key representatives from Sweden and Finland’s forest-based sectors followed with introductory remarks. The discussions focused on leveraging sustainable biogenic carbon as a cornerstone for industrial innovation, and the crucial role of carbon storage and biodiversity in fostering resilient forests.
The panel sessions featured Carbon Capture Company’s CEO, Tomas Lundmark, alongside representatives from Metsä Group, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, and Sekab. They delved into critical questions such as maximizing the value extracted from each biogenic carbon atom — from forest to industrial products. Additionally, they explored how EU policies can provide long-term incentives for climate-smart investments.
The dialogue underscored the importance of integrating innovative solutions into the forestry sector’s value chains to advance Europe’s climate ambitions effectively.
